Program Description: Program attendees will develop an understanding of how to organize and implement a designer-led design/build delivery system; when a designer-lead team is preferable; what special skills and capabilities do designers need to develop; what are the benefits to project owners, designers and contractors from a designer-led team; identify and implement solutions to common barriers faced by designers leading a design/build team; and discuss how designers manage construction risks. Learning Objectives: 1. When should a designer-lead design/build team be considered, and how to organize a successful design/build project team. Create and implement strategies to overcome common barriers and problems associated with designer-led design/build teams. 2. Understand what special skills and capabilities are required for successful implementation of a designer-led design/build team. 3. Identify and address common barriers for successful designer-led design/build teams. Presenter Mark Friedlander is an active speaker and author and is currently co-chair of the Construction Law Group at Schiff Hardin & Waite, as well as an Adjunct Professor at the Architecture School of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mr. Friedlander represents contractors, design professionals and institutional owners, providing both transactional and dispute resolution services. A significant portion of his practice involves structuring construction projects and consulting in project delivery methods. He has developed a unique design/build delivery structure and copyrighted a set of contract documents utilizing this method. Mr. Friedlander has been a frequent lecturer and contributor on a wide range of construction legal issues, including guidance on forming and successfully implementing designer-led design/build teams.
