Art Schwartz is Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel for the National Society of Profession Engineers, for the past 20 years. He serves as staff to the NSPE Board of Ethical Review and is a frequent speaker and author on many topics of interest to professional engineers. Description: Review important elements of the Engineer's Code of Ethics; identify common ethical problems, such as gifts, confidentiality, and obligations for public welfare and safety; discuss how to approach and resolve ethical dilemmas which arise during professional services; identify sources of guidance and assistance in resolving ethical issues; learn how to use ethical obligations constructively in dealing with unreasonable clients or employers; and use of ethical obligations to raise the stature of the engineering profession. Learning objectives: 1. Understand ethical obligations and how they relate to contemporary professional practice. 2. How to approach and resolve common ethical dilemmas, including where to obtain guidance and resources. 3. Implement ethical obligations in a positive manner to deal with unreasonable client or employer requests or expectations.
