Contract Change Order Management

Description: Increasing project profitability is a common areas of needed improvement for A/E firms. We will discuss how to utilize structured proposal preparation, contract negotiation and contract management practices to achieve significant improvements in project profitability and client satisfaction. We will provide guidance and examples on how to establish a detailed baseline scope and level of effort, utilize improved communication skills and tools to create a shared understanding on scope and pricing with your client, establish contract clauses which allow adjustments to price due to changing conditions, and demonstrate project management guide documents that can improve contract change management results. We will discuss early project techniques to address potential "scope creep".

Learning objectives:
1. Develop improved proposal and contract preparation practices that will increase project profitability by minimizing work done without payment.

2. Implement contract management tools, guide documents and checklists to improve your existing project management practices and project financial results.

3. Evaluate different contracting and pricing methods and clauses which can improve cost recovery due to changing project conditions, and learn techniques to obtain early client buy-in to potential cost increases.

Ronald Leaders is an engineer and attorney, and a principal in the Washington State law firm of Buckley & Leaders. For more than 20 years, Mr. Leaders has provided general counsel, risk management and other legal advisory services to engineering and scientific professional service firms, owners and contractors. He provides guidance on contract negotiations and management to design professionals, and is a frequent speaker on methods to negotiate and achieve more favorable contract results for A/Es. He is a certified corporate trainer of negotiations from the Harvard Project on Negotiation.

Mike D'Alessandro, P.E. PMP has worked in the design and construction industry for nearly 25 years. For 17 years, he was manager of projects and design-build initiatives with Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group. He also served as a member of the firm's Quality Council and led efforts to improve client satisfaction and design productivity.
